Jason Redmond | AFP | Getty ImagesWhen Satya Nadella replaced Steve Ballmer as Microsoft CEO in February 2014, the software company was mired in mediocrity. Many tech industry analysts and investors would say that, thanks largely to Nadella, Microsoft is now set up to be a powerhouse for the foreseeable future. In a 2020 interview, Pat Gelsinger, then CEO of VMware, said offering his company's software on Microsoft's Azure cloud was akin to a "Middle East peace treaty." Nadella is perhaps best known in the tech industry for pushing Microsoft deeper into cloud computing. While some in the younger generations have Microsoft software at work, it's not necessarily what they grew up using and may not be what they prefer.

In today's big story, we're looking at Microsoft notching another big win by briefly reaching a $3 trillion valuation. It's an impressive run for a company often viewed as the least sexy in Big Tech. 3 things in marketsInstagram/grandmabetty33The stock market is looking gray, and that's a bad thing. A famed economist said you shouldn't confuse a booming stock market with a strong economy. Microsoft Windows just hit a major milestone — its 40th birthday. On Nov. 10, 1983, Microsoft unveiled the first version of Windows. It was an extension of the software company's MS-DOS operating system for personal computers, which were just beginning to gain popularity in the 80s. But this version of Windows wasn't nearly as ubiquitous as the software is currently. Fast forward to today and over a billion people now use Windows, Microsoft reported in May.

China spent 1.4 trillion yuan ($191 billion) replacing foreign hardware and software in 2022, marking a year-on-year increase of 16.2%, according to IT research firm First New Voice. Two firms awarded the Harbin tenders were subsidiaries of China Electronics Corporation and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation - both heavily targeted by U.S. sanctions. The U.S. Department of Commerce, China Electronics Corporation and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation did not return requests for comment. Despite heavy spending on domestic substitution, however, foreign firms are still dominant suppliers for banking and telecoms database management. Non-Chinese companies held 90% of market share for banking database systems at the end of 2022, according to EqualOcean, a tech consultancy.

Intel stock dropped 3% Monday after Reuters reported that Nvidia and AMD were working on Arm-based PC chips. Intel currently has the majority of the market for PC chips, with AMD coming in second. Intel's PC chips are based on the x86 instruction set. Chips that use the Arm-based instruction set, like those for smartphones, often use significantly less power, which is critical for battery-powered devices. Qualcomm has been working on its own Arm-based PC chips for years, although it has yet to gain significant sales traction.

If the world's leading AI researchers use Llama, Meta could have an easier time hiring skilled technologists who understand the company's approach to development. Spisak helped oversee PyTorch and other open source AI projects when he worked at Meta from 2018 until January 2023. Although a number of open source LLMs are available, Lambert said Llama 2 is by far the most popular. "Facebook was not and that's sort of how they move forward and democratizing this, giving sort of broad access to open source. However, open source doesn't always win, and Padval acknowledged that "in this case, I don't know how it's going to evolve."

REBUFFED BY APPLENadella also testified that Microsoft had sought to make its Bing search engine the default on Apple (AAPL.O) smartphones but was rebuffed. On laptops, most of which use Microsoft operating systems, Bing is the default search engine and has a market share below 20%, Nadella acknowledged. Nadella became CEO of Microsoft in 2014, long after the tech giant faced its own federal antitrust lawsuit. As Google, which was founded in 1998, became an industry leading search engine, the two became bitter rivals.

Nadella was dismissing an argument that Google has made - that it is easy to change defaults on devices. He said that Microsoft, itself a tech powerhouse, had sought to make its Bing search engine the default on Apple (AAPL.O) smartphones but was rebuffed. The clout in search makes Google a heavy hitter in the lucrative advertising market, boosting its profits. "You get up in the morning and you brush your teeth and you search on Google," he added in a reference to Google's dominance in search. As Google, which was founded in 1998, became an industry leading search engine, the two became bitter rivals.

Drew Angerer | Getty ImagesWhen it comes to online search, it's Google's web and everyone else is playing in it, according to rival Microsoft. "Everybody talks about the open web, but there is really the Google web," Nadella said from the stand in Washington, D.C., District Court. Perhaps the most famous of those deals is the multibillion-dollar agreement between Google and Apple to make Google search the default on Apple products like the iPhone. He said the integration issues with Google's Search Ads 360 "keeps coming up in escalations" to him. Microsoft has begun integrating ChatGPT into its Bing search results through its partnership with OpenAI and is a leading player in the space, alongside Google.

The Microsoft logo is seen at the Microsoft store in New York City, July 28, 2015. Jonathan Tinter, a Microsoft vice president whose job has been to help Bing grow, testified at the trial of the U.S. Justice Department's antitrust case against Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google. The department accuses Google of paying $10 billion annually to wireless carriers and smartphone makers to ensure that Google search is the default on their devices. Tinter said that Bing has struggled to win default status on smartphones sold in the United States, and that this smaller scale translated into poorer quality search. "We were just big enough to play but not big enough to win," Tinter said.

Microsoft Chief Product Officer Panos Panay is leaving for Amazon after the company made budget and staff cuts, canceled products in his division, and amid discussions about a reorganization in his unit, insiders say. Microsoft, Panay, and Amazon did not comment. During nearly 20 years at Microsoft, Panay was notably in charge of the team that developed the Surface hardware business. Windows licensing and the unit's hardware underperformed relative to the company's financial projections, insiders say, and Microsoft responded by dramatically scaling back Panay's division. At Microsoft, insiders say Panay was known as a demanding leader and expected "white glove service" on everything, meaning a premium experience with extra care and attention to detail.

IBM's Red Hat has caused an uproar in the Linux community with its latest attempt to squash competitors like Oracle that offer clones of its flagship Red Hat Enterprise Linux software. Oracle has also offered its own version of RHEL called Oracle Linux since 2006, and Oracle and Red Hat have had an antagonistic relationship ever since. And, because that new, you-shall-not-share provision violates the spirit of open source (and some question if it also violates open source licenses), there was a predictable backlash from open source advocates. The core of it — known as the kernel — is built by the Linux Foundation, a non-profit that is separate from Red Hat (although Red Hat supports the foundation). On Monday, Edward Screven, Oracle's top engineering leader, published a blog post with head of Oracle Linux development Wim Coekaerts slamming IBM.

Microsoft offers the greatest potential reward for investors looking to invest in a stock over the next five-to-10 years, according to veteran investor Mark Hawtin. "It is without a doubt our favorite mega-cap name," he told CNBC's Pro Talks Wednesday. According to Hawtin, Microsoft will outperform the wider market as it has a diverse revenue stream. "I think one of the key things about understanding Microsoft is, they are so ingrained and embedded in so many companies," Hawtin said. Microsoft bundles its workplace collaboration software Teams with Office 365, hitting growth at rivals Zoom and Slack, which is owned by Salesforce.
The Microsoft executive walked into the small, windowless room in Studio C at about 8 o'clock that evening. Despite Nadella's public stance against those he has called "talented jerks," many inside the company say Microsoft retains a nearly unlimited tolerance for bad behavior by its top rainmakers and developers. "The Microsoft of 2021 is very different from the Microsoft of 2000 to me and to everyone at Microsoft," Nadella said. But some women say the investigations drag on for months or even years, with no clear timeline for resolution. What's more, some employees say Microsoft's efforts to promote racial equity often smack of tokenism.

Oct 25 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) posted its slowest quarterly revenue growth in five years on Tuesday as the tough macroeconomic conditions hit PC sales and slowed cloud growth, which had supercharged the earnings for years.
